The administration’s claim that hostilities with Iran have “terminated”—conveniently landing on the exact day of a War Powers Resolution deadline—is a cynical assault on the separation of powers. From the Libertarian perspective, this is a dangerous executive sleight of hand designed to keep the war machine running without the “inconvenience” of congressional consent.
By declaring a ceasefire as a “reset button” for the 60-day legal clock, the President is attempting to bypass the Constitution’s clear mandate that only Congress can authorize war. A naval blockade is not “peace”; it is a continuing act of aggression that keeps American service members in harm’s way and taxpayers on the hook for billions. Labeling active military operations as “terminated” while maintaining a massive force posture in the region is a semantic game played by those who view the rule of law as a mere suggestion.
True national security is not achieved through unilateral executive decrees or “Operation Epic Fury.” It is achieved through a non-interventionist foreign policy and a respect for the constitutional limits on power. When a President decides he can ignore statutory deadlines by redefining the word “hostilities,” the republic is replaced by an autocracy. The Libertarian Party demands an immediate withdrawal of all forces and a return of war-making authority to the people’s representatives. We don’t need a commander-in-chief who treats the Constitution like a loophole—we need a government that minds its own business.
